INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2016
Young people all over the world have been acknowledged as an important human resource; they have the ability to marshal significant contributions to national and international development; and are the only segment of every population that can replace the ageing labour force.
In view of the above, the United Nations has earmarked August 12 as International Youth Day to enable every nation to celebrate her youth, as well as to create a platform for them to express their ideas, thoughts, imagination, and innovation amongst others.
Since 2013, the Government of the Republic of Ghana through the NYA in conjunction with the UNFPA of the UN System annually celebrates the day to inspire and educate the young people in Ghana on a global theme.
This year’s theme; ‘The Road to 2030: Eradicating Poverty and Achieving Sustainable Production and Consumption” focuses on the leading role of young people in ensuring poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development through sustainable production and consumption.
The emphasis on Sustainable consumption entails the use of products and services that meet the basic needs of communities whilst safeguarding the needs of future generations. Therefore, the theme seeks to encourage the development and promotion of individual choices and actions that increase the eco-efficiency of consumption of all, thus minimizing waste and pollution which are critical to achieving equitable socioeconomic development.
