A sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an artificial field (astro-turf) has been held at Mamponteng in the Kwabre East Municipality of the Ashanti Region on Thursday 30th April, 2020.

The ceremony which was jointly performed by the CEO of NYA Mr. Sylvester Tetteh, Board Chair of the Authority Hon. Francisca Oteng Mensah who is also Member of Parliament for the area and Nana Kyerewaa Kenten II, queen-mother of Mamponteng traditional area saw some chiefs from the area, the media and selected board members and staff of the Authority in attendance.

Earlier, the delegation from the NYA made up of the Board Chair, CEO, Board Members and some selected staff called on the Paramount Chief of the Mamponteng traditional area, Nana Ayehbeafo Saasi II at his palace to pay homage and also seek his consent and blessing for the proposed project.

Following a welcome of the delegation by the chief’s elders, Mr. Henry Nana Boakye, a member of the NYA Board proceeded to give a purpose for the visit. He introduced members of the delegation and gave a brief background of the NYA and mentioned sports development which is the centerpiece of the project as a subset of youth development.

The paramount chief, in welcoming the delegation, thanked them for the visit and said he is proud to be associated with the project due to its worthiness and pledged to ensure the success of the project.

For her part, Hon. Oteng Mensah thanked the chief and elders for the warm reception and was exceptionally grateful to the chief, queen-mother and the community for their support and particularly in embracing the project. He referred to the chief as progressive and assured him that the project would not be a nine- day wonder.

Addressing the media after the sod-cutting, Mr. Sylvester Tetteh said the project will go a long way in unearthing talents and said the project is one sure way of proving the commitment of the Authority to the youth.

He gave an oversight of the project saying the facility is expected to have a 500-seating capacity stand, changing rooms, floodlights amongst others.

In a related development, the team paid a visit to the Ashanti Regional Youth Resource Center under construction at Nyinahin.

The team was highly impressed with the progress of work the which is about 89% completed. The CEO was full of praise for the contractor of the project due to the rough terrain and many challenges that had to be brazed just to get to the level it is. He pledged the Authority would do all in its power to provide the needed support for the project to be fully completed in the shortest possible time.

Facilities already in place at the center include a pitch, hostels, VIP lounge, goal posts, washrooms and stands.
